Choosing the Right Yarn for Machine Knit Fan Lace

A bent or damaged needle will cause problems in any knitting, but in lace work where you’re manipulating individual stitches with transfer tools, a needle that doesn’t latch and unlatch cleanly can cause dropped stitches that are very difficult to recover from. Run your hand gently along the needle bed and look for any needles that are visibly damaged or that don’t move as freely as their neighbors. Replace damaged needles before you start.

For tools, you’ll need at minimum a set of lace transfer tools appropriate for your machine. Most machines come with a single-eye transfer tool, which lets you move one stitch at a time. A row counter, either mechanical or electronic, is also essential. Make it a habit to check and update your row counter with every pass of the carriage.

Reading and Adapting a Fan Lace Pattern Chart for the Machine

Hand knitting lace patterns are typically written as charts, and machine knitters can absolutely use these charts as a starting point, but there are some important differences in how you translate a hand knitting chart to machine knitting instructions.

In hand knitting charts, each square represents one stitch as you would see it on the right side of the fabric. Yarn-over symbols indicate where a new loop is created, and decrease symbols show where stitches are being reduced to maintain stitch count. Reading these charts on a knitting machine requires you to think about what physical action on the machine corresponds to each symbol, and also to account for the fact that machine knitting typically produces the fabric with the back facing you as you work.

For machine knit fan lace, a yarn-over is typically represented on the machine as a deliberately empty needle, where a neighboring stitch has been transferred away and the empty needle will knit a new loop on the next carriage pass. The decrease is the stitch that was transferred to sit alongside an adjacent stitch, so that two loops now sit on one needle and will knit together as one stitch.

When you’re reading a fan lace chart for the machine, it helps to mark out each motif unit clearly before you start so you can see exactly which needles are involved in each transfer sequence. Some machine knitters use colored pencils to mark their charts, assigning one color to each row’s transfers so the sequence is visually clear. Others create a written row-by-row guide that describes each transfer in terms of needle numbers. Whichever approach suits your working style, the goal is to make the pattern as easy to follow as possible while you’re at the machine, because the physical act of transferring stitches requires your attention, and you don’t want to be squinting at a complex chart while also trying to keep your machine moving smoothly.

One other important consideration when adapting charts is the direction of transfers.
